What you need to do this fall

You're part of the Bio 121 CSLO 3 Run 3 pilot this fall. Here's what that means and what it asks of you, in the order you'll do it. The whole ask is about ten minutes of Hub work, plus one class period where you proctor.

At a glance
InstrumentSame 8-item scientific-method quiz as Runs 1 & 2 · ~15 min · ungraded, no new content
WhenThe class period right after Lab 6 ("How Enzymes Function")
PasscodeCATALASE — same for every section, every run; you give it in class
Your time~10 min on the Hub + one proctored period
What you do
1

Register on the Biology Assessment Hub — about a minute.

Enter your CCC email, select the section(s) you're teaching, set your own access code. You'll also confirm your enrollment and when you plan to run Lab 6 for each section — an estimate is fine, and you can update it anytime from your dashboard. Locked out later? There's a "Forgot code" link on the sign-in screen that emails you a reset.

2

See what your students will see.

From your dashboard you can open the student view — the study guide (8 concepts, tied to the catalase/H₂O₂ lab) and the quiz itself. Take the quiz once as a test student (first name "test", any last initial) so it's familiar before you're in front of your class. You'll enter the passcode just as a student will — the walkthrough is the full student experience. Discard the test record when you're done.

A 2-minute pre-flight check — tick all five and you're proctor-ready:

Registered on the Hub with my CCC email
My section(s) show up on my dashboard
Took the quiz once as "test" and discarded the record
Found the CATALASE passcode on my dashboard
Set (or estimated) my Lab 6 date
3

Proctor the quiz — in the class period immediately after Lab 6.

Students take it on their phone or a classroom PC — the Hub works on either — and it runs about 15 minutes. Same instrument as Runs 1 and 2; no new content, and you don't grade anything. Give the CATALASE passcode when you're ready for everyone to begin.

4

Give extra attention to predictions and positive controls in your Lab 6 wrap-up.

These are the two sub-skills item analysis flagged as this cycle's remaining floor — you'll see them called out in the Hub, along with a short pedagogical-strategies guide for teaching them.

5

Answer the reflection questions on your Hub dashboard after the quiz window closes.

Seven brief questions that populate from your section's own results — no separate survey, no separate paperwork. This is Run 3's closing-the-loop report.

The passcode
Students can review the study guide anytime, but the quiz stays locked until they enter a passcode. The passcode is CATALASE — the same for every section, every run. You give it to your class when you're ready for them to begin (write it on the board or say it aloud); it's also shown on your Hub dashboard so you don't have to remember it. Please don't share it with students ahead of time — it's what keeps everyone starting the quiz together, with you proctoring.
Timeline
Weeks 1–5Register on the Hub, take the test-student walkthrough, and post the student study-guide announcement (below) in your D2L shell.
Your Lab 6 weekSection-dependent. Proctor the quiz in the class period right after Lab 6, and give students the CATALASE passcode then.
Within a weekAnswer the reflection questions on the Hub.
April 2027First Friday: cycle closes with Form 3B. Nothing you need to do then — I compile from your reflection responses.
Links
The Hub is where you work the assessment; the Toolbox (D2L) is where the master syllabus and course-of-record documents live, under the CSLO 3 submodule — the Hub links out to it. If the module doesn't open, let me know and I'll get access sorted.

Good to know
It's a pilotFirst cycle running through the Hub end-to-end; Christos has tested it end-to-end. If anything looks off — during setup or in the moment while you're proctoring — text or email me and I'll sort it on the spot. You can't break anything, and I'd rather hear about it immediately than after. If a problem can't be resolved right then, we revert to a Brightspace quiz mirror for your section and I collect the item-level data from you manually. The goal is to have Run 3 return item-level data at capture — not to force the tool if it isn't working for your section.
Lab manualIn the new Bio 121 lab manual, "How Enzymes Function" is Lab 6, not Lab 5. Lab content unchanged; the position shifted after the metric-system-and-microscopy split. Your syllabus sequencing may need a small update if you haven't made it already.
SupportI'll walk anyone through their section setup individually — about two minutes. First-time Bio 121 CSLO assessment faculty get a brief primer before we start. Reach out anytime.

Questions welcome. Thanks in advance for making Run 3 the run that finally captures item-level data across all eight sections.

Student announcement — post it in your D2L shell

Easiest way: paste it as plain text. Start a new announcement in your D2L shell (headline: Bio 121 — Scientific Method Study Guide (review before our enzyme lab)), click the button below, then paste into the editor. The study-guide link stays visible and clickable — no special formatting needed.

Want it formatted instead? (optional)
1
Start a new announcement; in the Content editor, click the </> Source Code button (bottom-left of the toolbar).
2
Paste the HTML below into the Source Code box, click OK, then Publish.
Same announcement with the link masked and the boxes styled. The plain-text button above works everywhere; use this only if you want the formatting.
